Maybe you have decided you want to break out of your current industry, or you are ready to push yourself forward and apply for bigger roles. No matter what situation you find yourself in, here are some tips to help you move your career forward.

Assess

Unfortunately, many people who land a role they want won’t be looking at the future. Instead, they will let the company decide their trajectory and go along with it. After all – it is the easiest thing to do, and it can feel secure too. 

Instead, you need to take a look at your career and the progress you have made – and decide what you want. And if it isn’t, then you need to take a look at how you can change it. 

Assess what you are doing, what you have done, and what you want to do – take your career into your own hands and manage it. 

Skill Up

Perhaps you went into the job role with less in terms of skills, and you have gained some while you have been working – but what is the skill gap between where you are now and where you want to be? If no courses are offered, it can be a great chance to talk to your manager about courses that could benefit you and the rest of your team. 

Rather than go with a problem and no suggestion for a solution, mention there are skills that you could all benefit from and that there are LMS software options that would work. If there are no options for training within the company, take matters into your own hands and take courses at home.

Goals 

You won’t reach goals that you haven’t set, so take some time to set goals that will make an impact. Think about the role you want, then create a set of smaller goals to get you there. Make sure that they have deadlines, are achievable and that you can measure them too. Sticking with the SMART goal setting system will help. 

Coaching 

When you are stuck in your career and aren’t sure how to move forward, finding a career coach can change that pretty quickly. While they are unlikely to build you an entire roadmap, they will make sure that your wants and needs are crystalized and that you are actively working towards them at the pace that is most beneficial. They can also help you with removing mental blocks when it comes to taking action. 

Take Action 

Being all bark and no bite when it comes to your career isn’t going to get you to where you want to be. Taking action is the only way to see your career goals becoming a reality – and sometimes that takes confidence and bravery to make the first steps.
